(FinancialPress) — Thursday brought big news from Tesla (TSLA) with the reveal of the new version of its Roadster sports car and an all-new semi-truck — both with specifications that will have most of the market scrambling to get up to par.
The updated version of the sports car can go from a stop to 60 mph in an astounding 1.9 seconds. With that number, it would become the fastest- accelerating mass produced car ever. Meanwhile, the semi-truck can achieve the same speed in just five seconds when the trailer is not loaded, according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk. That acceleration speed can usually only be seen in luxury sedans – and is an absolute rarity in big trucks.
If the trailer is fully loaded, the vehicle can reach the 60 miles per hour benchmark in 20 seconds – which is still much faster than any diesel truck in the market. Also when mentioning full load performance, Musk stated that under those conditions, the truck can go for 500 miles with a single charge at highway speeds.
Most trucking routes cap out at approximately 250 miles, according to Musk – so drivers can do round trips on a single charge. The company is also set to release a 300-mile version.
On the flip side – even if Musk‘s assertion about the length of trucking routes is correct, most diesel-powered trucks can do far more than 500 miles on a full tank – and refilling them takes much less time than fully reloading a Tesla battery.
Meanwhile, the Roadster will be able to travel 620 miles on a full charge, and will have a stock top speed of 250+ miles per hour. That puts it very close to the $3 million Bugatti Chiron, which has a top speed of 261 miles per hour.
The new Roadster will sport 4 seats – unlike the previous version that got discontinued in 2012. It will cost $200,000 – and a $50,000 deposit will be required to reserve an unit.
