(FinancialPress) — After a week of gigantic losses, Facebook is rolling out a series of new privacy settings that will allow users to have more control over their data.
The new security settings allow users to keep track of what kind of data the platform has at its disposal, as well as the third parties that have apps in it. In the previous user interface, security settings and tools were spread over more than 20 different tabs.
“Last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data,” says a recent Facebook blog post on the matter.
Facebook finds itself in the eye of a global storm after it was revealed that a third-party app collected data from over 50 million users in the US. Cambridge Analytica, a big data company, used the information collected by the app to profile voters and attempt to sway the 2016 elections in that country.
The company is making a noticeable effort to appease fears of the occurrence happening again, as it also added a Privacy Shortcuts menu. In it, users can enable two-factor authentication and control which kind of ads they are served. A new “Access Your Information” allows people to clean up their profiles off of anything that they may not want online anymore.
“It’s also our responsibility to tell you how we collect and use your data in language that’s detailed, but also easy to understand,” Facebook said to close off the blog post. “These updates are about transparency — not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share data.”
Facebook (FB) has had an absolutely brutal week. The company lost over $80 billion in value, and got lambasted across the globe over its improper use of personal data. On Tuesday, CNN reported that CEO Mark Zuckerberg may be called to testify in Congress.
