By Horace Palacio: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a historic gathering, welcoming leaders from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to Ottawa for the first-ever Canada-CARICOM Summit, set to take place from October 17 to 19, 2023.
The Summit will be co-chaired by Trudeau and the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, who currently serves as the Chair of CARICOM. This significant assembly comes as CARICOM celebrates its 50th anniversary, emphasizing the enduring relationship between Canada and the Caribbean nations.
A statement released by Trudeau’s office underscored the Summit’s theme, “Strategic Partners for a Resilient Future.” The meeting aims to strengthen mutual cooperation and envision a prosperous path for inhabitants of both regions. High on the agenda will be discussions surrounding building sustainable economies, bolstering trade and investment, and championing multilateral collaboration. Particularly pertinent will be the collective efforts to combat climate change and its effects on the Caribbean, with a focus on enhancing financial accessibility for the region’s Small Island Developing States.
Another pivotal topic will be the ongoing crises in Haiti, where security, political, and humanitarian challenges continue. The Summit will serve as a platform for leaders to deliberate on fortifying democratic values, upholding human rights, and fostering regional security. Additionally, Trudeau plans to liaise with Canadian business leaders and investors, aiming to amplify commercial prospects within the Caribbean region.
In his role as co-chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocates group, Trudeau will utilize the Summit to propel the SDGs, which are instrumental in sculpting a harmonious and prosperous global future.
In his statement, Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his anticipation: “Canada and the Caribbean Community have nurtured a robust partnership over the past half-century, rooted in our people’s bonds and our mutual devotion to democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. As we convene in Ottawa for this Summit, our focus will remain steadfast on collaborative climate action, fostering economic vitality, and ensuring the safety and security of our people, now and for the generations to come.”
