White House demands ‘clean’ increase in borrowing limit

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is suggesting adding work requirements, among other measures, to a debt-limit bill.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday outlined some of his demands in the debate over raising the U.S. debt ceiling, listing proposals including cutting “excessive” domestic spending and beefing up work requirements for certain Americans.

The California Republican wrote to President Joe Biden to call for a start to negotiations on the federal borrowing limit, saying Biden and his administration have been “completely missing in action” after an earlier conversation over a path forward on the issue.
