JPMorgan says CEO Jamie Dimon recovering from emergency heart surgery

JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Jamie Dimon successfully underwent emergency heart surgery and is recovering, the bank said Thursday.

“We want to let you know that Jamie experienced an acute aortic dissection this morning,” JPMorgan said in a memo to bank employees. “He underwent successful emergency heart surgery to repair the dissection. The good news is that it was caught early and the surgery was successful. He is awake, alert and recovering well.”

The bank said co-Presidents Daniel Pinto and Gordon Smith will lead the company during Dimon’s recovery.

Dimon, 63, has led JPMorgan since 2005. In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, and underwent months of treatment.

Shares of JPMorgan

, which fell nearly 5% during the regular session Thursday, declined another 1.2% in after-hours trading, after the surgery was reported.
